Whatever the poll results are on that site, it's clear that the comments are overwhelmingly in support of Elizabeth. Here's what I wrote:
Good Lord, after all that's happened, people are kicking a woman when she's down?
If they had an ounce of compassion (or wisdom, because no one knows completely what happens within someone else's marriage or what is in another person's heart and soul), they would leave Elizabeth Edwards alone to heal within the shelter of her family and loved ones instead of looking for more blame and playing the endless "What if?" game.
What's done is done, people. And FYI? She did not even learn of the affair until after her husband declared his candidacy -- handing her an extremely awkward, painful, confusing situation to sort out even before learning within just a few weeks that her cancer had returned and had metastasized. Talk about having your world turned upside down!
Unless you have walked in her shoes and know all the details behind the scenes, don't pretend to know what she should or shouldn't have done.
And another FYI: Yes, for the individuals involved, this was a horrible, even tragic, setback. But if John Edwards had not run and pushed his agenda and specific programs for change (before any of the other Democratic candidates, who took many of their cues from him) and to provide a voice for "the least among us," the current Democratic platform would look different today. Sometimes we can find a greater good, even in the wake of people's misdeeds and mistakes.
And can anyone argue that Elizabeth Edwards's contributions on the public stage throughout the campaign have not been magnificent in forging consensus about one of our direst national needs, universal health care?
If you are uninsured or underinsured now and benefit in the future from a new national health-care policy, one of the people you should thank is Elizabeth Edwards.
NOW LEAVE HER ALONE!
