The publicly financed competitors to the Ivy League private schools are under tremendous pressure. Here is an article which states the California, Michigan, Virginia and North Carolina public university systems are the "Public Ivies". I didn't know that. I knew North Carolina followed the California model when it set up its system of universities , but that is all I knew.
Anyway, the pressure on public schools across the board (kindergarten through university) is quite real and the erosion is hastened by people who have stepped further away from the model that says we all have a public duty toward the common welfare (common weal) of our citizens.
