This past week or so, we have seen additional air let out of the Kennedy-Camelot myth with the revelations of an aging woman who was once a young intern in the Kennedy White House and who, it is said, was the Monica Lewinsky of that era. Except she was more discreet, less heartbroken, and lived in a time when the Press really didn't care to pry into the lives of Presidents.

Heroes deflate over time.  Familiarity may breed outright contempt, or it may merely breed disappointment. The dissonance between factual reality and inordinately high expectations brings with it a certain funk.

And so, in that spirit, is this report from McClatchy about another set of heroes who probably weren't.

And Heroes depend on heroic standards, and they too are often flawed, twisted, contorted beyond all recognition as useful or admirable.

Digby makes the point:

And when Heroes disappear from the scene, there inevitably arrive a number of aspirants to the position, most of them self-appointed, but some are desperately annointed.  Witness: Rick Santorum.  Man on a Mission to Save Us from Ourselves.  He has already decided to write off the thinning ranks of the non-Catholic world (thanks Rick).

With Heroes like this, who needs enemies?
