The Torture Tapes the CIA destroyed have gone off the media radar for months. Yet there are those who still think justice is worth achieving. The Obama Administration now presides over an investigator who was assigned to investigate this problem and that investigator is prevaricating in every legal way known to lawyers. Obama was to turn a blind eye to the issue and would like nothing better than for everyone to look somewhere else---or "forward" as he prefers to say.
The American psyche is strange. We aren't supposed to forget the Holocaust. We aren't supposed to forget our fallen. We aren't supposed to forget the veterans of every single conflict, least of all the present ones. We always go back for our dead. We always hallow the Founding Fathers.
Yet we are are supposed to look forward beyond slavery. We are supposed to forget the internment of Japanese citizens. We are supposed to look forward from the Civil Rights Movement. We are supposed to shop when terrorists attack our skyscrapers. We're supposed to look forward from 8 yrs of Imperial Vice-Presidential behavior. And we are supposed to look forward when we torture.
It's a very special formula. Man admits failure. Man seeks forgiveness. Man gets a pass. Man goes on wreaking havoc as though nothing at all happened before.
Human institutions are not supposed to encourage us be "the same" as we were before if what we were before was inhuman and unjust.
